TL;DR:
Building a side hustle while working full-time isn’t about having more time or better content. It’s about consistency, showing up before you feel ready, and focusing on real connection over chasing algorithms.
Side Hustle Content Creation: What It Really Takes to Grow While Working Full Time
Have you ever tried to build something on the side… and felt like you’re constantly behind?
You’ve got the ideas.
You’ve got the motivation (sometimes).
But time, energy, and real life keep getting in the way.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
In this episode of Creator News Live, I sat down with Sean “Tater” Roberson from But Mostly Disney, who’s doing exactly what a lot of creators are trying to figure out:
Building a real brand through side hustle content creation… while still working a full-time job, raising a family, and trying to stay sane.
And here’s the thing…
He’s not doing it with perfect systems or unlimited time.
He’s doing it by showing up anyway.
How Do You Actually Build a Side Hustle While Working Full Time?
Short answer: you don’t “find” time… you create it.
Sean doesn’t have some magical productivity hack. He just made a decision to carve out time before his day starts.
That means early mornings.
That means working when it’s not convenient.
That means accepting that your schedule will never be perfect.
And maybe more importantly…
It means letting go of the idea that you need everything figured out first.
Because you don’t.
Consistency Is the Real Advantage (Not Talent, Not Gear)
If there’s one thing that came up over and over in this conversation, it’s this:
Consistency beats everything.
Sean committed to showing up every week for his live show.
Not when he felt ready.
Not when he had the perfect idea.
Every week.
And over time, something started to happen…
People showed up, too.
That’s how you build momentum in side hustle content creation, not with one great video, but with repeated, reliable effort.
Why Most Creators Get Stuck (And How to Avoid It)
Let’s be honest.
Most people don’t fail because they lack ideas.
They fail because they overthink everything.
- “Is this good enough?”
- “Should I wait until I have better equipment?”
- “What if no one watches?”
Sean’s approach is the exact opposite.
He just starts.
Even when it’s messy.
Even when it’s not fully thought out.
Even when he’s not sure it’ll work.
That willingness to move before you feel ready is what separates people who grow from people who stall out.
Why Your “Throwaway Content” Might Be Your Best Content
One of the most interesting lessons from Sean’s journey came from what he thought was “throwaway content.”
Like most creators, he spent time working on more polished, high-effort videos. The kind you expect to perform well.
But what actually took off?
Water fountain reviews.
Yep. Water fountains.
Not exactly a big, carefully planned content idea. More of a “why not, I’ll try this” kind of post.
And yet… it worked.
People watched. People engaged. People remembered it. He even started getting recognized as “the water fountain guy.”
That’s the lesson.
We’re often the worst judges of our own content.
The ideas we think are too small, too simple, or not worth posting are sometimes the exact ones that connect.
Especially in side hustle content creation, where you don’t have time to overthink everything, those “throwaway” ideas can end up being the ones that build your brand.
Not because they’re perfect.
Because they’re interesting, specific, and real.
You Don’t Need a Big Audience (You Need the Right Perspective)
One of my favorite mindset shifts from this episode was how Sean thinks about audience size.
Instead of chasing massive numbers, he reframes it like this:
Even if just a small group of people showed up consistently to hear you talk…
That’s not failure. That’s impact.
And when you start thinking that way, everything changes.
You stop chasing viral moments.
You start building real connections.
And ironically, that’s what leads to growth anyway.
Community > Algorithms (Every Time)
A lot of creators are obsessed with figuring out the algorithm.
Sean took a different approach.
He focused on people.
- Responding to comments
- Showing up consistently
- Creating conversations, not just content
And because of that, he didn’t just build an audience.
He built a community.
That’s a huge distinction.
Because algorithms change.
But people who feel connected to you?
They stick around.
The Reality of Growth: It’s Not Linear
Here’s something most people don’t talk about enough…
Growth doesn’t happen in a straight line.
You can have:
- A stretch where things take off
- Followed by a plateau
- Followed by doubt
Sean talked about hitting strong numbers on one platform while others slowed down.
That’s normal.
The mistake is thinking something’s wrong when things level out.
The real move?
Keep going.
Stop Waiting Until You’re “Ready”
This might be the biggest takeaway from the entire episode.
You don’t get ready… and then start.
You start… and that’s how you get ready.
Not perfect.
Not polished.
Just published.
What Actually Moves the Needle in Side Hustle Content Creation
After everything we talked about, here’s what really matters:
- Showing up consistently
- Making time instead of waiting for it
- Focusing on people, not just numbers
- Letting yourself be imperfect
- Continuing even when growth feels slow
Not gear.
Not hacks.
Not “figuring it all out.”
Just doing the work.
Key Takeaways
- You don’t need more time; you need a better commitment to using it
- Consistency will outperform talent in the long run
- Community is more valuable than chasing algorithms
- Test more ideas than you think you should
- Don’t overvalue polished content
- Let your audience show you what works
- Growth will plateau; that doesn’t mean you’re failing
- You don’t need to be ready; you just need to start
So Let Me Ask You…
What’s the one thing you’ve been putting off because you don’t feel ready yet?
That’s probably the thing you should go do next.
Because in side hustle content creation, progress doesn’t come from waiting.
It comes from showing up.

[00:00:00] Sean Roberson: someone said You should do a live podcast. So the, the podcast was really just to drive the algorithm for the other videos. Like that was my goal. Like, I’ll show up once a week.
[00:00:08] Sean Roberson: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blah, blah, blah. I love Disney. And then maybe people will start watching the videos and it’s kind of gone the other way, right? Like where the community, I don’t even know if the people who come every week, and I mean every week to the chat, even watch the videos I put out. I have no idea.
[00:00:24] Sean Roberson: You know, but the community’s growing. And I feel like that’s really the secret, right? Like. Someone wants, you know, do what you love and the money will come. I think do what you are and the money will come, right? Like it’s, it’s a subtle difference, but it’s not just semantics.
[00:00:43] Jeff Sieh: hello folks. Welcome to Creator News Live. I’m Jeff Sieh and you’re not.
[00:00:47] Conor Brown: And I’m Conor Brown, and this is the show that keeps you up to date on what’s happening in the world of the creator economy and so much more.
[00:00:53] Jeff Sieh: You ever found yourself wondering what it really takes to grow a side hustle while working full-time? Are you trying to build [00:01:00] something on the side but struggling to find the time, energy, or focus to make it happen? Or maybe you’re looking for a way to turn something you love into something that actually pays off.
[00:01:11] Jeff Sieh: If that sounds familiar, you are in the right place.
[00:01:14] Conor Brown: Today we’re joined by Sean Tater Roberson, the creator behind, but mostly Disney, who’s doing exactly that. He’s balancing a full-time career, family life, and a growing brand that’s gaining serious momentum. Sean will be sharing what’s working, what’s been challenging, and what he’s learned along the way.
[00:01:34] Jeff Sieh: So sit back, clear schedule, clear mind to get ready for this week’s episode of Creator News Live.
[00:01:41] Theme Song: If your side hustles hard to grow, and your running tater here to save, turn that dream into [00:02:00] your day.
[00:02:06] Sean Roberson: And so much fun.
[00:02:07] Jeff Sieh: folks.
[00:02:07] Jeff Sieh: That is, uh, Sean theme song. So thank you for letting us, do that kind of craziness with you. but Sean, this is gonna be a fun conversation because there’s a lot of people, when I, I kind of posted this into the Mastermind and some other places said, Hey, I am thinking about doing this Side Hustle Secrets kind of series for the month of April, and your name came up right away because a lot of people.
[00:02:27] Jeff Sieh: Either we’re, you know, just recently they finally got their side hustle to be their main source of income, or they are working like you are to, you know, do this, this side hustle thing and also hold down a real job as we say. So, this will be a really fun conversation. So thank you so much for joining us today.
[00:02:44] Sean Roberson: Yeah. Thanks man. I’m, I’m, I’m psyched. I hope I offer something to, uh, folks listening. I’m, I’m actually thinking about starting a new thing about what I’ve been doing called, but mostly failing. Um and,and only sort of ironically, but I mean, that’s thing. The mistakes are what are, what have, what been it’s been driving me, [00:03:00] so why not share those for others?
[00:03:01] Sean Roberson: So.
[00:03:02] Jeff Sieh: Yeah, so, one of the things Sean has d does, he does a, like a live show and podcast and he also is a big fan of Ecamm. That’s what he uses to stream his show. And,They are the sponsors of the show. We appreciate them for doing that. And they just came out with version 4.5, which actually allows you to go live vertically at the same time.
[00:03:21] Jeff Sieh: So what’s really cool right now is I can see here on my screen, I can actually see a vertical window that’s actually going out to Instagram. So if you go to, at Jeff c over on Instagram, you can see the stream over there. And the cool thing is, is I can have. Different layouts. I can build it the way I want.
[00:03:37] Jeff Sieh: It’s not all like cookie cutter. So it’s very, very cool. And yeah, so we’re gonna try out for YouTube. We’re gonna do all sorts of stuff with this, but there’s some really cool stuff. So find out more at Ecamm dot com slash jeff. Save, 15% by using code Jeff. 15 when you check out. Alright, so, we’re talking about growing a side hustle and I wanna talk a little bit about how you do it.
[00:03:56] Jeff Sieh: ’cause the juggle is real. Sean and I [00:04:00] wanna know, like, just right starting out, the rest of you guys in the audience, like how many of you’re juggling a full-time job and a side hustle right now? You’re like, Sean, you’re doing both the things. You got a family, all this stuff. How many people, uh, watching, you are juggling a full-time job and a side hustle, Connor raise his hand.
[00:04:18] Jeff Sieh: But Sean, for people who don’t know your story yet, what does a normal week look like for you? Balancing real estate, creating content. And your family?
[00:04:28] Sean Roberson: it’s a lot. And so I, you know, I don’t have like the ability to alter physics ’cause I really need like another three hours a day so. What what I’ve found for me that works is I, I get up early, like I get up before my day really starts and, and try to limit my, the amount of time I spend on the, but most, mostly Disney stuff, before I start my real day.
[00:04:49] Sean Roberson: And I, and I will say that I, I am a little bit set up for success because my schedule. You know, revolves around clients. So a lot of it’s my own, like I, you know, I can be home at [00:05:00] 11. I mean, if you watch the show, you know, I’m in here almost every week watching and learning what these guys are, are putting down.
[00:05:06] Sean Roberson: So I do have some flexibility. I don’t have a nine to five, I don’t have to go into an office. So most of my job is from this desk, whether it’s real estate or creating stuff. So I try to do a schedule. I’m, I’m not good at that. I’m not a details guy. I’m very unorganized. sometimes to my detriment, sometimes it works out just great.
[00:05:26] Sean Roberson: so I, I, but I have started to try to plan things out a little bit on what day things will come out and how I do it and how I get it done. And then life gets in the way and I change it almost immediately. Kinda like going to Disney.
[00:05:38] Jeff Sieh: Well, but you’ve kind of done the same thing that, that we’ve done here is like you have made it so I’m, you’re gonna go live on a certain time every week, right? That’s kind of your schedule. Okay. And you kind of block around that.
[00:05:50] Sean Roberson: my wife, if she was here, would tell you that the podcast is probably the most consistent thing I’ve ever done in my life. And it was it, I really fell into it backwards. I had no desire to have a [00:06:00] podcast. It was not even on my radar, not even something I wanted to do. And I know. It’ll probably come up later, but I, I really just went to momentum.
[00:06:07] Sean Roberson: Not to always talk about how great Lou Mongello is in his group, but that’s where I met Connor and Jeff and, and these other people who are guiding me through this. And really, I’m just sitting back and listening to what they say and doing it almost blindly. And so the goal for me was a YouTube channel.
[00:06:22] Sean Roberson: That’s what I wanted to do, and I made it as difficult as possible by picking. One of the most crowded areas. I mean, there are, I mean, just Google, Disney, YouTube, it goes on and on and on. And there’s so many people and so many of ’em are probably better than me, right. and so, but I don’t want to be a YouTuber.
[00:06:39] Sean Roberson: Like I don’t just wanna do YouTube. That’s not my goal. My goal is to do Disney stuff. That’s what I love. And to find a way to go to Disney more often. So I kind of backed into it that way. And then. Everybody YouTube’s like, oh, you should do a live podcast. I’m like, yeah, sure. And that was, you know, 62 episodes ago or whatever.
[00:06:56] Sean Roberson: Um, which is
[00:06:57] Jeff Sieh: awesome. That is very, very cool.
[00:06:59] Conor Brown: You [00:07:00] mentioned Sean, how we all met at, momentum and I think it was, it was two momentums ago where, where we first met. so you’ve been at this for, for a while and I remember, you Prior to, but mostly Disney. You, you had a different brand and you’ve gone through a rebrand and, and all this stuff.
[00:07:13] Conor Brown: And I wanna hit on what you just said about how your goal is to go to Disney more. Right. Which I think a lot of us. Should start to understand about our side hustle, like setting a goal that the goal of our side hustle, becoming our full-time career. That’s a lofty, audacious goal, right? And sometimes people think, oh, well maybe if I don’t get to that, it’s, it’s a failure.
[00:07:35] Conor Brown: But in reality, maybe it’s just something that can supplement your life and make your life better. And that’s perfectly fine. And that’s what I think a good side hustle can be. For you, Sean, at what point did, but mostly Disney go from, this is fun to maybe, this could actually be something, maybe this could be some sort of business.
[00:07:57] Sean Roberson: So, and, and you are 100% [00:08:00] right? Like I’ve divided it up. And again, please don’t do any of this. I, I, I, when I, when I train real estate agents, I tell ’em this is my way, not necessarily the best way. So anything nice, it’s like the financial planner. This is not financial advice. but I do have a short-term goal and that’s, I mean, the dream, right?
[00:08:16] Sean Roberson: The dream is for. To do this full time, to do nothing but content creation. Something I love and something I’m really passionate about, that I can start at five in the morning and then at noon go, oh yeah, I’ve gotta get back out into the real world. But my goal is for it to just kind of feed itself, right?
[00:08:32] Sean Roberson: Like, if I could take no money out of the bank, buy cameras, do my annual pass, you know, enjoy the technology, go down to Disney once a month, that that would, I would check, put that in the win column and move on. I think it was a pipe dream. And again, I, I, I knew, I knew when I started this, it was gonna be the how much I love Lou Mongello show, but it was momentum, right?
[00:08:52] Sean Roberson: The reason I started doing it was because one of my wife’s friends was like, I love your husband’s Facebook. and, and then I had a company reach out and say, [00:09:00] Hey, we’re watching your real estate stuff. We’d love you to come do the social media for our company. And I’m like, I can’t give you my life.
[00:09:06] Sean Roberson: Like, I’m not sitting around thinking about this. I’m just posting what I’m doing. It’s without. Kind of Tootie mo horn. It’s very authentic, it’s very genuine, sometimes very bad, right? You know? But it’s, it’s who I am, so I can’t make that work for someone else. And so this friend of my wife’s was like, I look forward to his post all the time.
[00:09:23] Sean Roberson: So then I started posting more and then working on videos. And then I’m like, oh, well maybe I will go to Momentum. I really just wanted to hang out with Lou. Like he wouldn’t return my phone calls. So I’m like, well, if I pay a little money, I can go sit in a
[00:09:35] Jeff Sieh: Exactly. That’s what you have to do with Lou. Yeah.
[00:09:38] Sean Roberson: that’s exactly right. And so in getting there.
[00:09:41] Sean Roberson: It was just a revelation. Like I, I changed the brand while sitting at a table. Like I bought the but mostly Disney, address while I was sitting in the middle of the meeting. Like I just started doing stuff. Right. and. Jeff would say something, or Connor did a great sales presentation, Paul goer’s email thing, which I felt bad because I’d been [00:10:00] deleting people’s emails.
[00:10:01] Sean Roberson: All, you know, I’m not listening to that anymore and getting rid of these newsletters and then listening to Paul going, oh, I should, hmm. I should open these and check it out. But at Momentum, I came home really motivated, really like, okay, okay, maybe this will work. Maybe I’ll really, really hit full throttle and see what happens.
[00:10:17] Jeff Sieh: Yeah, we give Lou a a hard time, but there’s a lot of transformation that happens. And the other thing, it’s, it’s a different type of conference and, and we will toot his horn a little bit. it’s not just like, Hey, you go to this conference, it’s all social media, or, Hey, you go to this conference and it’s only like marketers.
[00:10:31] Jeff Sieh: This is, a like a. Cross section of entrepreneurs, everything from somebody who, works for the Smithsonian as a PR person to travel agents, to, email, experts. I mean, so it’s just this wide, group of people, which is so much fun and you get so much energy from, but I, I wanna go back a little bit to something that you said.
[00:10:49] Jeff Sieh: and I, you know, if you didn’t know, like you had a YouTube channel that was successful, like it’s over 20,000 subscribers, I think, and that’s, that’s a big deal. Like, that’s a big deal. I mean, you [00:11:00] can’t, I think what you found out is like, you can’t make a real living like that. You can’t just go, I’m gonna, I got 20,000, I’m gonna step back and that’s all I’m gonna do.
[00:11:07] Jeff Sieh: What’s been the hardest part of, like, you see that success, but then juggling a full-time job and then building a brand on the side. ’cause a lot of times when you see success, you wanna kind of drop everything and go do that thing, but you, you realize like, okay, I, I still gotta feed my family. So what’s the hardest thing that you had to do by when you first started that path of juggling that full-time job and building that brand on a side?
[00:11:28] Sean Roberson: Well, I mean, you know, my wife’s smarter than me and so I, I, I really have involved her. Like, she, she loves this. She loves being in the videos, she loves doing it. She thinks it’s really cool. She’s super supportive. but she’s also way more pragmatic than I, well, you know, she always jokes and, and it’s.
[00:11:44] Sean Roberson: It’s probably correct. Like if it wasn’t for her, I’d be on a park bench eating marshmallows all the time. Like that’s how I would live. So she makes sure that I don’t, you know, blow, oh, I’m going to buy this. I’m going to spend this money, you know, well, let’s pump the brakes a little bit. Let’s look at what we’re really doing.
[00:11:57] Sean Roberson: And that’s been really challenging because I live in [00:12:00] Virginia, right? And I’m trying to do content that’s 12 hours away. And so I’ve had to find a plan that’s economical. I’m, again, I’m lucky with real estate ’cause I can go to Disney for a week and work for from down there. 95% of my job is on the phone or on the computer.
[00:12:14] Sean Roberson: so I can work while I’m away, but trying to manage doing something that I’m not close to it, it. It’s tough. I mean, it’s a disadvantage and I’m just trying to make that work and give the illusion that I actually live in Orlando and I’m doing this stuff all the time, but when it comes down to it, like I have a car, I know Connor plays golf, I have a three 20 tee time today.
[00:12:34] Sean Roberson: I’m not gonna make, ’cause I, I’ve gotta go do a home inspection that popped up. So, you know, I, I do pretend to be an adult every now and again.
[00:12:42] Jeff Sieh: that’s all we’re, that’s all we, we all try to do is pretend to be an adult. we got some great comments. and Dustin He goes, that is great advice. You flew right past. I just started doing stuff. People worry so much about how do I start, just start doing stuff.
[00:12:56] Jeff Sieh: You’ll figure it out. That’s great advice. we’ve got, uh, rich Graham says, [00:13:00] my main hustle is my side hustle, And then, uh, Zach Brown says he’s raising a hand because he is doing, all the things as well.
[00:13:07] Jeff Sieh: So thank you guys for your comments, and we’ll try to get to more and, Jim Hughes even said, my business has multiple streams of side hustle. I know he’s a big Amazon
[00:13:21] Jeff Sieh: influencer as well, doing his fusion marketing stuff and remote producing. So Jim is living the dream as well.
[00:13:22] Conor Brown: So Sean, you know, I, I think over the years there’s been a lot of times where I know we’ve had conversations where you’re like, man, if I could just get to, to this point with it, right? If I could just, you know, make this amount with, with, but mostly Disney. and I know that’s tough and, and it’s a struggle, but you’ve also had some really good, you know, success from it, and you’re seeing progress and momentum.
[00:13:45] Conor Brown: Have there been any moments where you’re like, you know what, this just might not be, be worth it? And if you’ve had those moments, what’s kept you going?
[00:13:54] Sean Roberson: Yeah, it’s like, um,what’s Brad Pitt’s line in, uh, oceans 11, 12 or [00:14:00] 13? Are you suicidal? Only in the morning. and that’s kind of, kind of how I feel like every day, right? Like every day I think, why am I doing that? You know, what’s the point? You know? and every Tuesday night, honestly, I mean, Andrew, who’s my co-host on, but mostly Disney.
[00:14:12] Sean Roberson: every Tuesday night I’m like, ah, I don’t wanna do this. You know, it’s cold outside. I got a fire going, I don’t wanna walk in the back. And then, then you go, it’s like going to the gym, right? I don’t, I don’t want to go to the gym and I don’t, but I mean, people who go to the gym, you know, you walk in feeling awful.
[00:14:27] Sean Roberson: You walk out feeling great. right Like, so every Tuesday night I’m like, Ugh. And I’m turning on lights and setting all this stuff up, and then we have these amazing conversations. Like, even a bad show is fun, you know? And then I’m like, oh man, and I walk out. I can’t wait to do it again. You know? But, but it doesn’t.
[00:14:44] Sean Roberson: Hold very long. So, you know, it takes some dedication and I, I do truly like doing this. I like editing the videos. I, I like the creative side. I like trying to think of something new every day, which is getting harder and harder and harder. But I mean, I think about stopping it all the time, [00:15:00] all the time.
[00:15:00] Jeff Sieh: Yeah, and and it’s funny you mentioned that ’cause I. I feel every Friday morning I’m like, what am I doing? Like what, this is what I don’t, what I just, why do I do this? And, and every time I started I’m like, oh my gosh, the people show up. It’s so much fun. I really enjoy doing this. Like Mondays and Fridays.
[00:15:17] Jeff Sieh: Mondays are mastermind days. And then Fridays are, is this show are two of my favorite days of the week. So it’s a great like way I’ve set up my week that I kind of have like some, some stuff at the beginning and the end. That’s fun. But you mentioned coming up with new ideas. I want to, you know, go down that road a little bit because that’s how I kind of got drawn into your content.
[00:15:34] Jeff Sieh: I saw, I mean, you were at Momentum and we, we touched base there, but then you were doing like a series about the best water fountains in Disney, which I just thought was so irrelevant, but so funny and, and so creative. So how do you come up with those concepts and ideas and are you constantly looking for them?
[00:15:51] Jeff Sieh: Are you trying things and like, ah, it doesn’t work. I’ll, I’ll go to something else. But that seems like a theme you, you continue to use, which I really enjoy.
[00:15:57] Sean Roberson: yeah, I really do and, and it is trial and error, [00:16:00] right? And I, you know, again. Lou’s been such an influence, so I’m, I’m just gonna apologize once for talking about him all the time. thanks, Lou. Just take it. You’re great. But, I try hard not to look at the numbers, like you can’t not look at it. That’s not realistic.
[00:16:14] Sean Roberson: I know what Lou means. I don’t look at podcast numbers at all. I don’t care how many downloads I get. I don’t care how many, you know, views. It doesn’t matter to me. But I do look at. You know, reels and Facebook posts and things I put out there to see what kind of reaction I get to see if it’s working right, because I’m alone.
[00:16:31] Sean Roberson: Like there’s, there’s, you know, there’s no one over here. It’s just me. and so the only feedback I really get is online and, you know, you gotta, it’s kinda like Amazon reviews, right? You gotta take all the one star and the. And the lowest one’s out and read the middle. So there’s gonna be people who hate what you do, and that’s great.
[00:16:47] Sean Roberson: They should, you know, I, my, my motto is, loved or hated, just not ignored. Right. the, the water fountain thing, sometimes they don’t work. I did one from, my doctor’s office from here, and my son, actually, he’s in school in Jacksonville, was like, [00:17:00] Hey dad. My friend said, don’t do that. They, they were confused.
[00:17:03] Sean Roberson: They didn’t know where you were. No one cares about your doctor, office, water fountain. And that was a throwaway, right? Like that’s the thing. You don’t know what’s gonna grab people. I had nothing to film. I didn’t know what to do, and I did one. And then, you know, that’s, I just started doing it ’cause it was easy.
[00:17:18] Sean Roberson: There’s, there’s tons of water fountains and I mean, and here’s a tip. Don’t drink out of the water fountains. Like you can go to any quick service place and they’ll give you a. Cup of ice water. That’s the real secret. Although I do have one that’s better a water fountain than, but I’m waiting till the end.
[00:17:33] Sean Roberson: and now I get introduced as the water fountain guy. Like, it’s the strangest thing, you know, I, I would’ve, it was, but again, it was a throwaway. It was not something I’d ever planned on doing
[00:17:42] Jeff Sieh: Oh, that’s fun.
[00:17:43] Sean Roberson: once.
[00:17:43] Conor Brown: it’s always those ones. It’s always the ones that you think nothing’s gonna happen with this, that something actually happens with this. And as we’re talking about content, we can kind of transition to our, our next second. Where we’re talking about how do you grow the brand, how do you create content?
[00:17:57] Conor Brown: Without burning out. And I wanna ask the [00:18:00] audience, first off, do you feel like you have a system for your content, right? Is that system include, you know, capturing ideas, capturing, storyboards, right? Creating the content? Do you have a system in place, or are you kind of winging it every single week?
[00:18:18] Conor Brown: If you do something consistently weekly, then turning it over to you, Sean, what’s actually working right now? On, but mostly Disney from a content perspective. And has anything been surprising you lately about what has been working?
[00:18:32] Sean Roberson: So it’s interesting, the, the YouTube stuff is kind of plateaued for the moment, and I’m okay with that. Like, I haven’t been as consistent about getting long for my, my plan is to do a short video every day. it was two a day and that was really just too much. so one short a day and then one long video every Sunday night, which has not been happening at all.
[00:18:52] Sean Roberson: It’s kinda like my newsletter. It’s, it’s sporadic. But what has been working, and again, you know, we, we get preached this at Momentum, [00:19:00] is, community, right? Like that’s what drew me to Lou, right, is Lou has these people in orbit around him.
[00:19:06] Sean Roberson: Like you guys, Paul Gowder, I mean, you know, Lisa, they’re not a glass or these incredible people that just float around him. And by getting involved in that community, it gave me a community and then. You know, there’s four places I post to Facebook every day. My group, my site, and then two other groups. And I don’t advertise anything in the two other groups ’cause they’re not mine.
[00:19:26] Sean Roberson: Like, I’ll never ask, I, I don’t even know if people know that I do content creation. And that really is just for me. Like it’s, I like talking about Disney. My real life friends do not, And so there’s this huge bubble of folks on the internet who want to talk about the same thing I do. That’s why, you know, people talk about, oh, the Internet’s so bad and so divisive.
[00:19:45] Sean Roberson: I’m like, then you’re doing it wrong. My internet’s great. Like I love on my online presence and I love the people around me and I love turning someone who’s evil around. Like there’s a guy and I’ve known him for, since COVID, ’cause I talked to Lou about him during [00:20:00] COVID, and I wrote this scathing response to one of his posts.
[00:20:03] Sean Roberson: not to me, but it was just, he was, and I, you know, then delete, delete. Leah not sending that, and now I’ve just kind of engaged with him and now he posts great stuff on mine. Like, he’s, he’s always, you know, he always responds. He’s always got something awesome to say. So, you know, it’s kinda like Ghostbusters two, right?
[00:20:19] Sean Roberson: You know, the s
[00:20:20] Sean Roberson: um, you’re gonna get out that what you put into it. And so. Facebook has been blowing up. I mean, I, I just hit a 30 day period where I had a million views, which freaks me out, and that doesn’t really translate to money right now, but I’m not trying to do that, right. I just want people to come and talk Disney with me, and then the, the rest will fall into place, right?
[00:20:41] Jeff Sieh: So funny, funny thing, we talked about you last week on the show. I think you were here for that. But we were talking about, how, because Paul was talking about the Facebook monetization and the cool thing is like you even said like you went and followed Paul’s advice and now you had a million views.
[00:20:55] Jeff Sieh: So it’s kind of cool that we, we followed with you on the show today. But, stuff like that is when people see [00:21:00] that, oh, he’s got a million views. He must be like super wealthy. Like he’s Facebook must just be paying him money. And that’s not really how it works. And I know you, you’ve really leaned into live shows and, and podcasting.
[00:21:13] Jeff Sieh: So why did you decide to do that? How has it helped with your constant creation? We already kinda leaned into the, the you’re being consistent and that’s one thing. ’cause when you show up for a live show, doing it every week makes a huge difference. So what, why did you do that format and, and what, like, and how has it helped?
[00:21:30] Sean Roberson: So again, it was absolutely backwards. I had this YouTube channel and I’m trying to, you know, game the algorithm. ’cause you do have to do some math, right? Like it’s not all just, oh, I’ll be charming and everyone will come listen to me. No, it doesn’t, that doesn’t work at all. ’cause you’re not gonna be found.
[00:21:45] Sean Roberson: And so I, I, I enjoy that side of it, right? Like, I kind of like the analytics, which is not something I’m into. but again, at Momentum someone said You should do a live podcast. So the, the podcast was really just to drive the algorithm for the other videos. Like [00:22:00] that was my goal. Like, I’ll show up once a week.
[00:22:02] Sean Roberson: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blah, blah, blah. I love Disney. And then maybe people will start watching the videos and it’s kind of gone the other way, right? Like where the community, I don’t even know if the people who come every week, and I mean every week to the chat, even watch the videos I put out. I have no idea.
[00:22:18] Sean Roberson: You know, but the community’s growing. And I feel like that’s really the secret, right? Like. Someone wants, you know, do what you love and the money will come. I think do what you are and the money will come, right? Like it’s, it’s a subtle difference, but it’s not just semantics. And so, look, I’ve always been a storyteller, right?
[00:22:35] Sean Roberson: I’ve always liked to be funny. You know, I, I enjoy these things and I’m unapologetic about being a Disney fan. Like it doesn’t, you know, Disney adult, whatever, they, I don’t care, right? I love going to this place. I have tons of other interests. It’s not the only thing I do, but. Again, if it’s a passion and I could make money to fund my passion, then why?
[00:22:55] Sean Roberson: Why wouldn’t you try it? Right? I mean, Jeff does that carving show, which is the [00:23:00] nerdiest thing I do. You know that I sit on a Friday afternoon and watch someone knit and someone carve. But if you love carving, then why wouldn’t you sell the things you car? To fund carving. Right. And so that’s what I’m trying, you know, trying to do that.
[00:23:15] Sean Roberson: And that’s how I fell into the podcast, which led to consistency. And then you start seeing people show up all the time. I mean, and, and you know, I, I do kind of end up like, you know, all these little sayings we got. You know that, that at Momentum or wherever else, you know, if 10 people showed up at your house every Tuesday night to listen to you talk, that’s incredible.
[00:23:33] Sean Roberson: Like, think about I can’t get three other guys to play golf with me on a Wednesday morning, much less 10 folks come listen to me, say stuff like it’s an, it’s amazing, right?
[00:23:42] Jeff Sieh: Mm-hmm. You know, and maybe we can dig in this a little bit. you mentioned what Katie and I do, at one o’clock, on Fridays now, and that’s the, uh, maker’s table. but one of the things that. I didn’t do that.
[00:23:54] Jeff Sieh: So I did it during COVID and I was like, that was great. People like really liked it. It helped people and that was awesome. [00:24:00] But it’s one of those hobbies that I didn’t want to monetize because I was scared it’d quit being fun. Right? Like it would be like, oh, it’s a job now. So do you have any worry about that?
[00:24:10] Jeff Sieh: Like with the Disney stuff? Like I, I’m assuming the end end goal is like, okay, you can buy all that stuff ‘ cause you’re making enough money with your content and then eventually, like maybe I could be a professional content creator and not do real estate anymore. Or do it a lot less, is what I’m thinking.
[00:24:24] Jeff Sieh: But do you worry that it’ll, it’ll start feeling like it’s a job And I’ve asked Lou this question too,
[00:24:29] Sean Roberson: So I did, I was really concerned about that. It’s kind of like, so I, I, I bartended for 30 years. You go into this magical place and you’re like, oh, this, I love this bar to coin a freeze. and then you work behind it and you’re like, you know, I’ve been behind the curtain. It’s not as great as I thought.
[00:24:43] Sean Roberson: Nope. Every time I roll in through that gate at Disney, I’m just as excited as when we went once a year as a family. So, no, and there’s always something new there. There’s all these details, like, there’s tons of stuff I’ve never done at Disney, right? Like there’s always something new to do. so [00:25:00] I was, I was very concerned like, I’m gonna make this thing I love into something that I have to do and then be like, oh, bother.
[00:25:07] Sean Roberson: You know? But no, I not, not yet. And it’s been, you know. Two and.
[00:25:11] Conor Brown: I think you gotta really get good, Jeff, about setting up your barriers though. ’cause that can happen and it can, it can creep in and then all of a sudden it can, it can be a hurricane, right? Of, of, oh God, I have to go doing this thing and, and you start to resent the place.
[00:25:26] Conor Brown: I have it very separated, right? I will go into the parks for work, right? And I’ll also go in for, for myself. And I think whatever hobby it is, if you do something like that, You have to set up those, those guardrails so that you like it. Sean, I dunno if you follow any YouTube golfers, I watch it all the time.
[00:25:48] Conor Brown: Right? I have to think that those guys, they’re not filming every single round they’re playing, right? ’cause they still seem to really love golf. They’re filming a lot of the rounds [00:26:00] and a lot of the rounds there on and there. They’re personality driven and they’re putting on a show, right? But I also think that they’re probably going on a Friday afternoon to play nine holes.
[00:26:11] Conor Brown: After work, work, whatever that might be with their friends and stuff. So that’s how I kind of treat it. Jeff, maybe in your life you’re also whittling on a Sunday afternoon when nothing else is going on. You’re just sitting there with your family So you have to really, really, really protect the hobby, protect the thing that you love, and set aside some time where it’s just personal.
[00:26:31] Conor Brown: You don’t want to get anything outta it other than just doing the act of doing it.
[00:26:36] Sean Roberson: And take some like time off from it. So like my kids get on me a little bit about filming because again, because my budget’s limited, because my time is limited. You know, I have to combine some things. So we do, you know, a family trip each year and during that time I try to shoot and burst. I, you know, look, and again, my filming at Disney is so secondary to anyone else’s enjoyment.
[00:26:58] Sean Roberson: Like if I’m filming a [00:27:00] parade and a kid wants to sit in front of me, sit in front of me, dude, it’s, this video is not important. but. But I do take time off, like where I don’t bring the camera, you know, we’re going out to dinner. I do terrible food reviews. I’m not good at it. No one likes ’em. I don’t like ’em.
[00:27:13] Sean Roberson: I just don’t have a skill for it. And so, you know, it is good to leave the camera at home sometime, you know? And so that, that I’m just with my family now. I’ve also, and again, this is not advice, I’ve also explained to my kids some of the tax implications of me filming things. So. I’m like, if you want to keep going, then we need a picture of this.
[00:27:32] Sean Roberson: And my kids are so good at it, like social media to them is a toaster, right? Like it’s a mystery to me that I’m like some kind of Da Vinci code puzzle box that I’m trying to unravel and they just throw it out there like it’s nothing. But I haven’t been able to get them like super involved. Like, dad, your reels are stupid.
[00:27:48] Sean Roberson: Well then make me one. Well, I don’t wanna do that
[00:27:50] Sean Roberson: either. You know? I’m like, you know, again, and my demographic is. You know, 35 to 55, it’s not really, you know, there are not a lot of 17 year olds going, [00:28:00] you know, I, I can’t do homework on Tuesday. I gotta go see what he’s talking about on, but
[00:28:03] Sean Roberson: mostly Disney,
[00:28:04] Jeff Sieh: Right, Yeah, exactly.
[00:28:06] Conor Brown: the comment from, from Rich, I think is so applicable right here. rich, how you doing? He says, while my love for racing got me started on my side hustle, the things that keep me going are the people and learning new things that challenge me both feed the soul.
[00:28:22] Conor Brown: So, Sean, I wanna ask, kind of going off script here, Jeff, I wanna ask you, you love Disney, right? You loved going to the parks, you love traveling there with your family and experiencing the new things and stuff, but. What have you learned that’s not Disney related, that you’ve only gotten since you started, but mostly Disney?
[00:28:41] Conor Brown: What has started to fuel you more?
[00:28:43] Sean Roberson: I, I think the engagement that I get, I didn’t expect, right? Like, I didn’t expect it to translate into something that is, you know, non Disney friendships, right? Like, I, I, I just assumed you watch these creators and, you know, they, they seem [00:29:00] famous to me like, ’cause they’re on a TV screen and I’m old.
[00:29:03] Sean Roberson: So people on TV are famous and then. You get recognized, which is having me one time. So it’s not let’s, you know, pump the brakes, tater, you’re not, you’re not important. But to have someone come up and go, Hey, aren’t you? But mostly I, I watch your videos and you’re like, kink or, the other thing I know, one of the questions was how do I measure success?
[00:29:22] Sean Roberson: And I, I’ll tell you the singular thing that, Makes me, you know, you ask what gets you up and gets you going is that I got a snail mail, like a real life card in the hospital from someone who I’ve never met in real life, you know, was online. They went outta their way to find my wife, you know, DM her, Hey, would you be okay if I sent this to your husband?
[00:29:42] Sean Roberson: Because I was in the hospital, I was sick. And they’re worried about, we’re worried about him. And man, that’s like climbing out of the computer screen, right? And I never expected that. Like that’s. You know, I mean, there is some non Disney stuff like the tech I get really excited about. You know, I, I do enjoy cameras now.
[00:29:58] Sean Roberson: I’ve got a new microphone, which [00:30:00] led to a new mic arm and new light. You know, I do really enjoy all that stuff too, which is why I thought it’d be fun to start a second smaller thing, kind of chronicling what I’ve screwed up and how you could save yourself some money by not buying everything at once and seeing what’s works.
[00:30:14] Sean Roberson: So,
[00:30:14] Jeff Sieh: Yeah.
[00:30:15] Sean Roberson: I don’t really know if that’s the answer to your question, but that somehow came outta my mouth.
[00:30:18] Jeff Sieh: Well the, the thing too is like, like I got in this all these years ago doing internet stuff because I, I wanted to play with tech stuff. That was the whole reason. And like I learned how to do computers because I wanted to play doom on my college network. Like, you know, like, so, because you had to configure stuff and that’s led to, to this like, so kids play those video games.
[00:30:39] Jeff Sieh: In fact, we have some great comments and Dustin even says, I wonder if the same thing about video game content creators do they have just playing for me time? ’cause they’re always streaming. They’re always on Twitch doing stuff. he also says, what a great perspective. If 10 people came to your house every Friday, wouldn’t that be a big deal?
[00:30:55] Jeff Sieh: And Amy Keys, the amazing Amy Keys says, Sean is so creative. [00:31:00] I was sitting beside him at Momentum when the name, but mostly Disney came to him. How cool is that? Like she was there when the, the idea happened, so,
[00:31:09] Sean Roberson: Now I will.
[00:31:09] Jeff Sieh: saying that.
[00:31:10] Sean Roberson: One little thing to think about. I, I love that name and I’m really attached to it and I’ve got it everywhere. Like if you, if you Google, but mostly Disney, it’s me and one other guy who had a podcast like seven episodes and he still shows up in the search, which drives me crazy. ’cause he is not doing it anymore.
[00:31:25] Sean Roberson: If he was still doing it, it’s fine. I’m not trying to
[00:31:27] Sean Roberson: erase this guy from internet, but what I did realize is that Disney’s a copyrighted word. And so when I went to go make t-shirts. They didn’t make ’em for me. And I’m like, oh. And then I was thinking about like Disney Food blog, their DFB, which they’ve had to I’m sure, brand because you know, Disney’s not gonna sue you, at all.
[00:31:48] Sean Roberson: So, so I’ve kind of like dug into the, the, the BMD logo when I, when I have to, but I, I really like the way, but mostly Disney flows and I like where it came from, so I’m keeping it no matter what.
[00:31:59] Jeff Sieh:
[00:31:59] Conor Brown: Sean, I [00:32:00] remember after the first momentum that you were at, you got up and you said, well, the things that I have to do after are I have to buy a Mac and I have to buy Ecamm, and then you went off and, and ran with that from, from there, along those lines and, and about putting out.
[00:32:16] Conor Brown: Content more at speed ’cause you’re doing something so consistently and so daily. Are you leaning into anything, AI to help you with that? Are there any tools that are helping you speed up your content creation? Are there any workflows that you’re finding actually useful?
[00:32:31] Sean Roberson: I am and, and what I’ve found and, and my kids hate. So my, my oldest is an artist. they had a, they had a, uh, internship at Pixar last year. So they hate ai, hate it. Although she thought your thing was kind of funny. She’s like, somehow in that picture, dad, Jeff made you older and younger at the same time.
[00:32:46] Sean Roberson: It was very strange. So I do use it and I use it quite a bit for outlining and skel. Like, like Jeff asked me to write a bio and I, I don’t know. I don’t what, what? I don’t, it’s not that I’m shy or reserved, I just don’t [00:33:00] like talking about myself in that regard. and so I said, Hey, I know what I can do and AI, check the internet, let me know what it thinks goodbye would be.
[00:33:07] Sean Roberson: And it came up with one that was like. You know, nine paragraphs long and I shaved 80% of that off, and it was pretty good. when I was, I did a thing, we were on the podcast one night and we ended up in like this Jeff Foxworthy loop with, you know, if you have a favorite Imagineer, you might be a Disney adult.
[00:33:24] Sean Roberson: and so I was like, I’m gonna post one for 30 days. I’m gonna do it once a day, every day, a Disney adult. And that lasted two days before I ran out of ideas, that were funny, at least good ideas. So I had, you know. I had AI go and make me a list of a hundred of ’em, and then I chose the 30 that I liked the best or, but, but nothing ever.
[00:33:43] Sean Roberson: I haven’t had much with ai that is out of the box, right? Like, so there, I still think there’s some creativity to it. Like it gives me ideas and then I change it around and shift it. Like right now I’m looking if anyone has any ideas, please feel free to send ’em to me. You know, I’ve been getting a lot of, A lot of engagement with [00:34:00] asking a question, you know, what’s your favorite restaurant? You know, what’s your favorite thing? But I think people are starting to get bored with that. Like, I’m not in the last week or so, I had someone on one of the groups go, I’m so tired of these questions. In fact, one of the, and, and that’s the other thing I do every morning as I get up and answer all my comments.
[00:34:16] Sean Roberson: Maybe that’s a good measure of success, right? Like it’s starting to get hard to do that every day. Like I’m getting enough engagement where I really, it’s not realistic for me to sit there and answer every comment, but I try, even if it’s just like amazing, I love soup, you know, something, to show that I’m a real person, right?
[00:34:32] Sean Roberson: That I’m there. I’m not just, I’m not just farming engagement. I really wanna talk about this stuff. And, the thing is, is that I see. Others doing exactly the same thing to the point that one day I’m about 10 comments into answering. What I think is my post. And there’s a lady who says, you know, Sean already did this yesterday and stop, you know, you’re copy and pasting.
[00:34:52] Sean Roberson: I’m like, what is she? And I thought she was mad at me. I’m like, oh my gosh. Well, I didn’t, oh, this isn’t my post. Like someone else had literally just copy and pasted my post [00:35:00] in the same group I was in. and I saw someone, you know. Made their own post about not liking that. So I went in there and explained why I do it and what I do.
[00:35:07] Sean Roberson: And you’ll notice I never, I ha I do other things and I’m not gonna tell you about it. This is just where I come to talk Disney. And if you would like to talk more, I’d love to have you somewhere else. You know, feel free to click on the icon and see where I am. But it really is as earnest as I can be about it.
[00:35:22] Sean Roberson: I’m not, let’s be fair, I’m not just trying to get engagement, like I really do want to talk to folks.
[00:35:28] Jeff Sieh: Well, I think that’s important. It’s something, doing something that you can’t scale, right? Like that. I mean it’s, you’re finding it’s hard to do, but that’s part of the reason you’ve gotten the success. So trying to find that balance is really tough. And I think every entrepreneur or a content creator hits that at some time and then you kind of gotta make some decisions.
[00:35:46] Jeff Sieh: And it sounds like you’re kind of in that spot, but doing things that can’t scale, I think is important. Connor asked you about AI kind of to help scale and scale your content. Is there a preferred tool that you like to use or what are you using for, to do that
[00:35:58] Sean Roberson: So I love Suno. I [00:36:00] love Suno. Like I have a little theme song on, and I did have to edit that down. Again, nothing out of the box seems perfect, right? and I love my theme song. It’s a lot of fun. Sounds a lot like Jeff. which may or may not be where I got it from. the. Music I use in my videos now because when I started I used copyright music ’cause it’s so much fun to make like a cool, you know, Disney montage of walking through the park.
[00:36:22] Sean Roberson: But then once people are paying or you’re getting ad revenue, you can’t do that anymore, which I feel like YouTube. Should change or would be able to change. But, I was using epidemic sound, which was great, but it’s a lot of searching and I never really, you know, I, I was always settling. So with Suno, it really has cut my music time down by like, I would say 80%.
[00:36:42] Sean Roberson: So now I can go in, I want a bouncy, bubbly Epcot, like, which it seems to understand, and it’ll give me a song that’s almost, you know. I think I’ve only had to search twice. I think one time I had to do a different search for what I was looking for. Like it really does a great job. And then if I ever figure out the script, that’ll be awesome, [00:37:00] especially with Ecamm doing the nine by 16 stuff.
[00:37:03] Sean Roberson: And I, and, and, and Connor’s, right? Like I, I’ve been a piece, the last time I was on a Mac was in like fifth grade gifted programming. You know, programming basic like line 10, make the color dot. And I’ve always, I’ve, I’m still have an Android phone. I’ve always been a PC guy. And then, I really wanted to use Ecamm.
[00:37:19] Sean Roberson: I really like the software, so I now own two max. all because of a piece of software, which is, is fun. But I, and I didn’t know they’re a sponsor of Jeff’s show, but they, they really are. It is a, a community there. Like that’s what they’ve done, right? They’ve built a community for a product and they’re, they’ve got a, I’m sure, a super loyal brand following.
[00:37:38] Sean Roberson: I know they have me locked in there.
[00:37:40] Jeff Sieh: It’s so funny that they, it’s software and there’s like, they’re fans of software. You don’t see that, you don’t see the people wearing Excel t-shirts. I guess maybe they do, maybe some super nerdy PC people do, but, yeah, it’s just, it’s pretty awesome. I wanna go back to one of the things we talked about, like where we find ideas.
[00:37:56] Jeff Sieh: And I think the biggest thing for me, because I’m like Q Sean, [00:38:00] like I, my brain’s going all the time. I’m thinking about things and a lot of times I. As I get older, especially, I, I lose those thoughts. Like, I knew I had a great thought about I was supposed to do this thing and where did it go? Like, and so I’ve been using AI to capture those ideas and put ’em in a place where I can retrieve them later, later.
[00:38:19] Jeff Sieh: And it’s made a huge difference, for me. But like Ray, even Ray Keating says, for his ideas. He was a weekly newspaper columnist for more than 20 years, and he’s just learned to be open to taking and everything around you, and bam, you get an idea. That was my situation, but then I would lose it because I would be like, you know, task switching and like, we’re online and like, your, your wife comes in and says something.
[00:38:41] Jeff Sieh: You’re like, oh, it’s gone now.
[00:38:43] Jeff Sieh: So that’s what I use it for, more than
[00:38:46] Sean Roberson: Yeah. And I need to do that too. ’cause I saw, I, I think Android Auto updated and now Gemini in my car.
[00:38:52] Sean Roberson: Which I, again, I have techno joy. I love the stuff. I’m good with it. I don’t, I’m, my life’s on the internet. I’m, I’m an open book. But yeah, I’ve lost [00:39:00] more what I think were good ideas than, than I’ve thought of.
[00:39:03] Sean Roberson: You know, they, I’ve gotta keep notes open or something to, to constantly write that stuff down and then, you know, honestly a bad idea. It’s like the, A team bad plans better than no plan at all. Right? Is that a reference anybody’s gonna get? You know, I, what I find is like, I think we kind of touched on it earlier.
[00:39:19] Sean Roberson: I’ll spend an hour editing this video and making sure the transitions are on the music and I just love it and it gets like a hundred views, you know? And then you post a water fountain, you get 1500. It doesn’t make any
[00:39:31] Sean Roberson: sense, right? So, so some days it’s cool just to put a bad idea out there because, you know, I like things that are different than, Jeff likes things than Connor likes and somebody’s gonna like what you put out.
[00:39:42] Sean Roberson: Probably,
[00:39:42] Jeff Sieh: Mm-hmm. So, I wanted to take some more comments because we have some, some awesome people in the audience as always. And, Lori o Travel says I So enjoy his content. So, you’ve got, your fans have followed you over. Sean and Amy Lynn. 2, 4, 4, 1 [00:40:00] says, Sean has become my mentor in posting my videos.
[00:40:02] Jeff Sieh: He tells me each week, just post them.
[00:40:06] Sean Roberson: So an and Andrew has a great YouTube channel name. It’s Mouse Ears because he does, um, cars as well as Disney. So he’s, he’s Refurbing a, a pickup truck called Big Al. He’s also the co-host on, but mostly Disney. But he does the same thing, you know, like, oh, I don’t like it. Oh, it’s no good. Of course, it’s no good.
[00:40:23] Sean Roberson: You’re not good at this yet, you know? I mean, no one’s gonna go back and watch video. One of mine. You know, let’s pick on Lou Mongello. Go back to episode seven. It’s.
[00:40:32] Jeff Sieh: Pretty bad.
[00:40:34] Sean Roberson: I mean, it was good enough to start right, but he’s so much more refined now, and that’s the process, right? You’re constantly sharpening. Like I, again, I, I have a tough time tooting my own horn, but if I look at the first video I really posted, it’s so awful and it’s so long, and it’s just, it’s not good.
[00:40:53] Sean Roberson: And then some later my wife will go, you know, you’re as good as somebody else. Like, like you, you don’t have the numbers, but that [00:41:00] video’s just as good as what somebody else.
[00:41:02] Jeff Sieh: But, but with Andrew, like I was telling him, I’m like, dude, don’t spend any money. Don’t go do it. Just post the videos. You know, it it, again, another quote I heard at Momentum was, Lorne Michaels. the show Saturday Night Live, it doesn’t go on because it’s ready, it goes on because it’s 1130 and we do it right.
[00:41:18] Jeff Sieh: Yeah. Well that makes me feel good. That was my quote from my talk, so thank you.
[00:41:22] Sean Roberson: Yeah. It’s an awesome quote. I use it almost every day for so many things in life. It really is a, it really is an awesome quote.
[00:41:29] Conor Brown: so when you’re doing these things, Sean, are, are you, when you have to stay consistent? I mean, you probably need some sort of system, maybe, I don’t know. What does your content workflow look like today? With all this limited time that you have? Are you batching videos and posting on that cadence?
[00:41:45] Conor Brown: Are you winging it? Is it a combination of, of something? What does your content workflow look like?
[00:41:51] Sean Roberson: It’s mostly winging it, honestly. I mean, I do have a plan, like I have a really rough outline, but I don’t think I’ve posted a long [00:42:00] form YouTube video in like two weeks, right? which is probably why the channel’s suffering because cons, you know, I’ve noticed these algorithms promote consistency and then reward it.
[00:42:09] Sean Roberson: So the more you do, even if it’s bad, just do it. But editing. A vacation video or a weekend video that, you know, it’s a couple hours. It takes me a long time. I’m not great at it. the first advice I got, you know, I watched all these YouTube things and they’re like, I don’t care how much you say you enjoy it, or it’s a hobby, get someone else to edit your video.
[00:42:26] Sean Roberson: Stop. Go make content. You shouldn’t be doing this. Have someone else do it, but I can’t afford it, you know, I mean, that’s the thing. I have to budget for trips to go down and to have content. And if I don’t have content, there’s no point in paying anyone to edit it. So I try to start on the videos for Sunday, on Friday.
[00:42:43] Sean Roberson: my goal at least is to record the podcast or live like this on Tuesdays and have it on Spotify and everywhere else by Friday. It doesn’t always happen. but that’s, I, I do have a plan. Like I get up in the morning, I answer quotes, I have my coffee, I wake up a little bit, then I make a reel.[00:43:00]
[00:43:00] Sean Roberson: Then I try to post a picture, then I go back and answer some more comments because I do think the quicker I answer some, In the mornings gets, gets it kind of primes the pump, so to speak, and then I leave it alone for the rest of the day. Like then I might come back at night and answer some questions or if I don’t have anything else going on, I might jump back in at noon and do stuff.
[00:43:20] Sean Roberson: But what I’ve also found is I’m right now editing videos from last June and they’re still, people are still looking at ’em like it doesn’t matter. People just want to go watch you walk around Disney. What’s weird and fun?
[00:43:30] Jeff Sieh: It’s cool. Very, very cool. we’ve got some great, uh, comments I wanted to pull up before we go too much further. of course Dustin’s saying, oh, now we’re talking about ai. And by the way, Dustin is the amazing co-founder head Cheese bigwig over at Magi. Find out more about that@magi.co slash Jeff.
[00:43:47] Jeff Sieh: that’s one of the only tools I say, you know, get the deal, get the long-term annual plan or whatever, because he has all these different, tools you can use inside of the Maggi interface. And speaking of that, Zach Brown says, oh, the love [00:44:00] hate relationship with epidemic sound. But Dustin came right back with, Hey, by the way, we’re gonna be adding Suno to Magi soon and role that will allow AI to produce images, turn into video clips, generate the music, and you combine them.
[00:44:11] Jeff Sieh: Oh my gosh, it’s gonna be your all in one package. Look at that from, uh, Dustin over at Magi. and then Kira says, I love seeing your brand and your live show continue to grow such a big shift, even in a year, you should be proud.
[00:44:25] Jeff Sieh: So thanks Kira, and thank you for that encouragement to Sean. let’s talk about really quick, advice you would give other creators who maybe be starting out or just maybe a, a few steps behind you. If you could go back to day one of, but mostly Disney, what would you do differently?
[00:44:41] Sean Roberson: I think I would’ve had some patience in. And a plan, like a plan would be better. I mean, again, I’ve, I’ve lived my entire life by Serendipity’s guide, right? Like I, I am not a planner. I, and it, again, it’s worked out so far. so I keep doing that. But like I have cameras and gear and [00:45:00] lights. I’ll never use, you know, and I, I have ’em sitting in a bag in the closet, like I should have not bought all the stuff I bought.
[00:45:07] Sean Roberson: And some stuff you can’t help. Like you, you know, you buy a GoPro and then the Osmo three comes out, you know? But.
[00:45:12] Jeff Sieh: Right.
[00:45:12] Sean Roberson: but you know, and, and Katie from eca m you know, I love her gas. don’t have gas, you know, gear acquisition syndrome because it’s funny, I really wanted the Sure microphone. I really wanted it, but I couldn’t justify it.
[00:45:25] Sean Roberson: Like, I would listen to my show and go, you know, it does sound pretty good. And I think Paul Gowder broke it for me. We were talking one day and I moved the mic stand and it. It broke the USB seaport, so I had to get a new one. ’cause you know, that’s my
[00:45:39] Sean Roberson: livelihood, right?so I, I probably would’ve spent less money.
[00:45:42] Sean Roberson: On the stuff that I have, and that’s kind of why I was thinking about doing this other thing to kind of show you all the junk line around that you don’t need. Right. good content is king. Like, it doesn’t, you know, I do think good audio is important. Like I won’t listen to a podcast. That doesn’t sound good.
[00:45:56] Sean Roberson: now I’ve gotten a little crazy about it where I’m watching videos on how to [00:46:00] tweak settings, I do think I got lucky in that I had a clear goal. Again, I didn’t want to be a YouTuber and so I did waste some time watching YouTube videos that had, were not applicable to me at all. you know, I don’t wanna make faceless videos that generate revenue.
[00:46:14] Sean Roberson: That’s, that’s not my goal at all. My goal is to do Disney stuff. now I might come along with other interests, but anything I do. That I create content for is gonna be something I like. It’s gonna be because it’s not that I’m trying to sabotage myself, but if this only stays a hobby, right? If I continue to make all of $40 a month or whatever. I’m still happy, right? Like I’m still having fun. I might have to pull the plug on some stuff at some point in time. I do brace for that. but you know, there, there’s that thing like what’s just over the horizon? We don’t know, right? Like tomorrow might be the day that I get a million views and a bunch of people jump in and start talking all the time.
[00:46:53] Sean Roberson: You, you don’t know. And you have to make educated guesses. That’s why it’s good. Walt had Roy, I have my wife [00:47:00] who keeps me in check on these things and you need to sound that off other people, right? You don’t want a bunch of yes people who tell you, oh no, it’s great. Oh no, it’s great. And then, you know, while you’re miserably failing and you know, some kind of sense of, of false hope.
[00:47:12] Sean Roberson: But you know, then you read about Walt and he was in, you know, in debt for so long. He really. Banked on, on his dream, but he followed through with that. Right. It wasn’t like he just said, I dream about this park. Good luck. You know? I mean, that guy was out there painting. That guy was out there every day.
[00:47:30] Jeff Sieh: And that’s what I do. I think about this stuff probably more than I should. Right. Yeah. And that, that’s the thing too about Walt is he was the best repurposer that ever probably existed. He would get GE or whatever to pay for his ride at the world fair, and then he would take it apart and put it in the park. I mean, that’s just, that’s smart. And like he was thinking it through. So I, I love thinking about that as a content creator
[00:47:53] Sean Roberson: And I have a plan. And you know, Connor knows that my goal is that there’s a coffee company. I’d like to see if they do some kind of sponsorship, even if it’s just [00:48:00] coffee. I have a different plan to kind of engage them, but I’ve been reaching out to other random folks who have been kind and said no.
[00:48:08] Sean Roberson: Right? but they have a metric for the numbers they want. And everyone said, Hey, call back when you hit this mark. Call back when you hit this mark. I’m also. Trying really hard, like not to do Patreon, not to ask for money, from people. I would love to fund it. In other ways, like I don’t want to lean on people who come and hang out.
[00:48:28] Sean Roberson: I don’t wanna lean on the community to pay for what I do. you know, I do love what Lou does with, you know, like joining his levels and having these private calls. And maybe someday I’d do something like that, like a small membership or something. but I’m really careful with that because these people trust me with their time.
[00:48:43] Sean Roberson: Right. And they don’t have to. And I don’t ever wanna, I don’t ever wanna overstep my bounds there, so.
[00:48:49] Conor Brown: You’ve learned so much as you’ve been doing all of this, and we were joking about that new side thing. You might start, but mostly failure, right? And, and teaching people you know what, what [00:49:00] has failed, what has worked, and how you’ve gotten to where you are along the way. What do you wish people understood about turning a passion into income?
[00:49:10] Conor Brown: What aren’t they realizing? What do you think they need to know before they start on any endeavor?
[00:49:16] Sean Roberson: Well, I think when you look at it from distance, it, it seems impossible, right? Like, again, like I was saying, you know, seeing, seeing Lou on tv, he’s a celebrity to me, right? and it just seems like, oh, everyone’s got it all together and, you know, oh, they have all these plans and cameras and they know what they’re doing.
[00:49:33] Sean Roberson: No, they don’t. No one knows what they’re doing. Like we are all guessing. I, I do feel like I’ve been very fortunate to have surrounded myself. With some smart people, right, like that I can lean on or, or shoot a text and, and they’ll answer some questions. I try not to, you know, impose myself on other people’s time, but all this is possible.
[00:49:50] Sean Roberson: Like anything really is possible. You have to be realistic about it as well, you know, and it takes a lot of time. Like I. I still am in the very infant stage of doing [00:50:00] this, in my opinion, right? Like I’m, I’m maybe farther along than I thought I would be. Like, I feel like the momentum, no pun intended, is, is going really well, right?
[00:50:08] Sean Roberson: but again, it’s, it’s, it’s literally just starting. It’s ’cause you’re the first step’s the hardest, blah, you know, whatever, insert any idiom or, or, or saying you want there, but, but you can do it. You can absolutely do it. If I can sit here and find a way to raise three kids, have a wife, a dog somewhere, um, still sell real estate.
[00:50:27] Sean Roberson: I was bartending, I was doing some travel agency stuff, which I still may do at some point in time. you know, I can do all that and get it done. then. Certainly you can, right? I, I do wish I had four more hours a day. That’d be great. If we had like a 28 hour day would be nice. If that’s possible, we could adjust the orbit of the earth.
[00:50:46] Sean Roberson: that would be spectacular. But, you know, I’ve created some time, right? Like instead of getting outta bed at seven, I get outta bed at five and now I do have two more hours a day that’s not gonna interfere with the real stuff, right? So.
[00:50:57] Jeff Sieh: That is great advice is, is taking that extra [00:51:00] time where, you know, most of America watches a lot of TV or Netflix or whatever, and I’m not saying that’s bad. Like my wife and I, we sit down and watch the, the shows at night, but maybe trimming that, maybe trimming like an hour or two and use that towards your business, like you said in the morning.
[00:51:15] Jeff Sieh: instead of, you know, I’m gonna only watch one show tonight instead of two, or whatever it is. And that can add up really, really fast. Like
[00:51:22] Jeff Sieh: really fast.
[00:51:23] Sean Roberson: Because it becomes a habit, right? and, and you’re doing something right? Like even if no one’s watching, you’re producing, you’re creating something, something that’s yours. I love, and I really hate to admit it, but I love police body cam videos and. I, I know. It’s so bad.
[00:51:38] Sean Roberson: It’s so
[00:51:39] Jeff Sieh: the same way. He loves it too.
[00:51:40] Sean Roberson: and my, my wife will come in like, why are you, this is so depressing.
[00:51:43] Sean Roberson: Why are you watching this stuff? I don’t know. I just like it. but what I find is I’ll watch one and then go, what am I doing? Why am I, I, I could be, you know, I’ve got videos lined up. There’s things I want to do, like want to do, not need to do, but want to do that. I’m not doing to watch someone get arrested at A [00:52:00] KFC in Wichita, Kansas.
[00:52:01] Sean Roberson: Like, that’s not. That’s not good use of time. You know you’re not gonna feel good when you’re done with
[00:52:05] Jeff Sieh: Right. Yeah. I guess for me, so the, the thing that gets me is like short form video. Like, that’s what kills me. Like I’ll, like, I’ll start on, I’ll, I’ll just go to Instagram to check my comments and then it’s, I’ll get it ’cause it sucks you in and then all of a sudden you’re scrolling and like, it’s three hours.
[00:52:21] Jeff Sieh: Like, what happened? What am I doing? so anyway, that’s what you kinda have to learn and be self-regulatory enough that you can kind of notice where your weakness is.
[00:52:30] Sean Roberson: Well, that’s the other thing too, is that like Lou kind of set this up because what I realized is I would watch him live on Wednesday nights and I wanted more, and I’ve told Lou he needs to do more video. Like I would watch
[00:52:41] Sean Roberson: Right, and I wanted more Lou and I couldn’t find more. Lou I, I’m a. I’m a positive person by nature and a lot of Disney and a lot of the internet can be negative, right? Like that gets views and clicks. and I didn’t wanna do that. I wanted to be happy and I wanna be fun.
[00:52:56] Sean Roberson: I’m not a Disney apologist. I will tell Disney, you know, I’m not afraid to say [00:53:00] something’s wrong, like the lobby of the Polynesian Hotel, which they ruined. But, you know, I overall. It’s a joyful experience and I wanted more Lou, and I couldn’t find more Lou, so I decided to try to create more Lou, right? I do the same thing in real estate, you know, I sell a house, I need a friend or someone who knows me, or someone who’s used me to wanna buy a new house, and now I’m kind of pivoting there to start building houses and neighborhoods so that I can create my own economy.
[00:53:25] Sean Roberson: And that’s what I, you know, translates over to this. Like there’s a hole. I mean, even though there’s a lot of YouTube video on Disney, there wasn’t what I wanted. It wasn’t what I liked. And if I’m looking for it, then maybe someone else is too. And maybe I can achieve some kind of critical mass of those folks who don’t wanna watch the same people walk around the same parks, doing the same Festival of the Arts video.
[00:53:46] Sean Roberson: You know, something a little bit different. Look at this guy, he’s an idiot and he keeps screwing this up. He’s mostly failing,
[00:53:52] Jeff Sieh: So we’re kind of, we’re at the end of our time, so where can people find out, oh, oh my gosh, I want more of Sean Robertson’s content from, but mostly Disney. [00:54:00] Where can they find out more about you? My friend.
[00:54:03] Sean Roberson: Yeah, I think you can absolutely just, I think you can actually just type in mostly Disney and I come up on most of the searches, but mostly disney.com will send you hopefully to my landing page and then YouTube. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, all that is just, but mostly Disney. I’ve, I’ve, I’ve stolen it all.
[00:54:20] Sean Roberson: It’s all mine now.
[00:54:22] Jeff Sieh: That’s awesome. And now Sean does, he, he’s very self deprecating but his stuff is really good. His show is awesome. I try to tune in whenever I can when it comes across, so make sure you guys go check him out at, but mostly Disney across all the interwebs, because he is an amazing content creator and it’s fun to watch his journey.
[00:54:39] Jeff Sieh: He’s just a good guy. It’s good wholesome content and he just makes you, enjoy yourself when you’re watching his content. So make sure you guys go check him out. Conor Brown. Where can people find out more about the amazing Conor Brown?
[00:54:52] Conor Brown: Well, after you’ve watched Sean’s very first video and seen what an abomination that was, come over to me. Vacation [00:55:00] kingdoms.com. At Vacation Kingdoms across all the social medias. Awesome episode Always love chatting with Sean.
[00:55:07] Jeff Sieh: Yeah. Thank you guys. So many great people. We got Rich Graham having some great content. Dust this out, as always, some new people showing up. But Kira, Amy, Zach Brown. Thank you guys so much for being here on the show. We wouldn’t be able to do the show without you. Thanks so much for our sponsor, Ecamm.
[00:55:23] Jeff Sieh: You can find out more about them at going to Ecamm dot com slash Jeff. And with that, we’ll see you guys next time. Thanks everybody.
